The Radial Foundation was formed in 2006, born out of a desire to give space to artistic ideas that need time and courage, and don’t always fit in with established funding principles. Founded in parallel with Radialsystem as a non-profit foundation under civil law, it was shaped from the start by the conviction that the most powerful art is that which transcends boundaries, and opens up new ways of thinking.

The central objective of the foundation’s work is the funding and initiation of high-quality artistic productions, distinguished by their interdisciplinary and innovative approach. The Radial Foundation sees art as an open process - an encounter between contemporary dance, music, fine art, and new forms of expression. It supports projects that are keen to experiment, take risks, and develop new artistic languages.

At the same time, the foundation is deeply engaged in educational work. It runs projects for children, young people, and adults, with the aim of increasing access to cultural education and strengthening creative competencies. The focus is not on the transfer of knowledge or final results, but rather on experiencing, exploring, and learning through creative processes. In this way, art becomes a tool for personal development and social participation.

The Foundation was established in 2006 in close connection with Radialsystem and was made possible, in part, by the personal support of choreographer Sasha Waltz. With initial assets of 50,000 euros, the foundation quickly grew, thanks to donations from other engaged personalities - the initial figure was more than doubled by the end of 2008. This early support was an expression of mutual trust in the power of art, and in the potential of an independent funding platform.

Sasha Waltz describes her impulse for the Radial Foundation as follows:
“My impulse for the Radial Foundation stems from a vision of helping artists and projects to realise their ideas, especially those who receive little or no public funding. Projects developed at the intersection between contemporary dance, music, and fine art, with a focus on nurturing up-and-coming talent.”

Today, the Radial Foundation in Berlin is an active platform for artists, patrons, and partners. It creates spaces for dialogue, exchange, and long-term collaboration, developing its work in ongoing conversations with those who support and help shape its mission. In doing so, the foundation remains true to its original vision: enabling art that moves, connects, and looks towards the future.
